Handwriting Practise

Please click on the link below which will take you to a handwriting site we use in school. Please focus on 'continuous cursive beginners' and 'capitals beginners' to practise forming letters correctly.

Wednesday 30th June - Wednesday 7th July

This will be the last homework for Year 1. I would like the children to log onto BusyThings and practise labelling the fruit. 1 house point will be awarded for all fruit labelled correctly. I would like to say a huge thank you for continuing to support your child through homework and the online home learning tasks this year.

Wednesday 23rd June - Wednesday 30th June

This week we have been encouraging the children to eat their fruit and vegetables throughout the day! For homework, I would like the children to log onto BusyThings and complete labelling the vegetables. 1 house point will be rewarded for all vegetables labelled correctly!

Wednesday 16th June - Wednesday 23rd June

This week I would like the children to log onto BusyThings and answer questions in a quiz all about halves and quarters of shapes! We have been learning about this this week, and questions may need reading to your child.  1 house point will be awarded for most or all questions answered correctly!

Wednesday 9th June - Wednesday 16th June

This week I would like the children to log onto BusyThings and practise their shape work. I would like them to look at one shape at a time, count the corners carefully and then put them into the correct groups. A house point will be awarded for most or all shapes sorted correctly!

Wednesday 26th May - Wednesday 9th June

This week and over the half-term I would like the children to log onto BusyThings and complete a quiz all about weight and mass. I would like the children to order the objects from the lightest to the heaviest. When we return back to school after half-term, children will be rewarded with 1 house point if they have correctly ordered the pictures.

I have also updated BusyThings with some new reading/word games which I would like children to focus on over half-term.

Children need continue with their reading, practise to read alien and real words using BusyThings, practise their 2s, 5s and 10s numbers and begin to practise writing and reading numbers up to 100.

I hope you all have a safe and relaxed half-term!

Wednesday 19th May - Wednesday 26th May

This week I would like the children to log onto BusyThings and complete a quiz all about length!  The questions are the type of questions the children are used to during their Maths lessons. Completing this quiz will also help your child to revisit length. 1 house point will be awarded for all or most questions completed correctly!

Wednesday 12th May - Wednesday 19th May

This week I would like the children to log onto BusyThings and complete 2 tasks set for them. I would like them to recap flowers and plants. The first task is to label the parts of a plant. The second task is to match the flower names to the flower pictures. A house point will be awarded if all numbers are sorted correctly.

Wednesday 5th May - Wednesday 12th May

This week I would like the children to log onto BusyThings and complete 2 tasks set for them. As we have been practising to learn our 2s numbers and 5s numbers, I would like your child to sort out numbers which are 2s and aren't 2s and put these into the correct groups. They need to do the same for the 5s numbers. A house point will be awarded if all numbers are sorted correctly.

Wednesday 21st April - Wednesday 28th April

This week I would like the children to look at the plants and trees knowledge organiser provided on the class page in 'Our Curriculum' star. Please focus on the plants section and go through this with your child by looking at the vocabulary, discussing parts of a plant and their use and different types of plants and flowers too. We will be completing work on this next week.

Wednesday 14th April - Wednesday 21st April

  • Continue hearing your child read and letting them hear a story being read to them by an adult.
  • Practise spellings on Spelling Shed. Your child will get a new spelling list every Thursday.
  • This week we have been learning numbers to 50. Please practise this at home by starting at any number up to 50 and counting forwards as well as backwards. Write down 2 numbers in order forwards or backwards and let your child fill in the gaps, e.g. 25 26 ___   ___   ___   ___   ___       43 42 ___   ___   ___   ___   ___   ___. Encourage your child to say the numbers out loud, write them down, spot numbers on houses, bins, in shops, etc.
  • Continue to let your child practise reading and writing the tricky words on the word mat provided at the top of this page.

Easter homework

Over the Easter holidays there are a few tasks I would like the children to complete which will link with their learning after our holidays. Homework does not need to be brought in, but we will discuss it when we return to school.

- Find and talk about common plants and flowers in our environment (weeds, daffodils, daisies, roses, etc.)

- Try baking or cooking with a grown up and talk about each step (instructions)

- Plant a seed and look after it

- There is a tricky word mat provided which shows all the words your child should know at this point of the year, both reading and writing. You could read these aloud for your child to write or write them for your child to read.

- Continue to listen to your child read, but also share stories by reading them to your child.

- Don't forget BusyThings - I have updated some of the Maths games with numbers up to 30 and 50 as we will be moving onto this after Easter. The phonics games are also good to continue to practise reading a variety of words.

Wednesday 17th March- Wednesday 24th March

It has been lovely to have the children back in the classroom! Homework to complete this week is...

- On our class page, go onto 'Our Curriculum' and scroll down to 'Knowledge Organiser'. These are documents linked to a topic in Year 1 with key information children need to learn. Please look at 'Continents and Oceans' and go through the vocabulary and recognising/locating continents as well as the 2 oceans.

- Find out where your family comes from! Next week as part of our Geography learning, we are learning about where families come from around the world. We are looking at parents/grandparents only. Your child needs to remember the country name and the continent the country is in.

- On Tuesday, children need to bring wellies or old footwear in a bag. We are going to be going into our conservation area to collect insects from our local environment and discuss the importance of returning them back to their homes after studying them.

Wednesday 6th January- Wednesday 13th January

This week your child will need to log in to BusyThings, click on assignments and then complete the maths homework. We have been learning about 3D shapes and the homework is to match the names with the 3D shapes. You may need to help your child to read the words and the only ones we haven't covered are hemisphere and prism.

Please continue to practise and learn spellings set for your child too.

Wednesday 16th December- Thursday 7th January

Over the Christmas holidays I would like you to try logging onto Spelling Shed to practise spellings ready for the new year. Please see your child's book bag towards the end of the week for instructions of how to do this.

Wednesday 9th December- Wednesday 16th December

This week there is a game on the favourites on BusyThings called 'bird words'. I would like the children to play this game which is all about reading and then typing the words. I need them to read the words by segmenting and then blending or reading by sight, and then finding the letters on the keyboard to type the word.

I will keep track of who has played and they will be rewarded with 1 house point!

Wednesday 2nd December- Wednesday 9th December

This week we have practised subtraction.

To get the children used to seeing both addition and subtraction number sentences, I would like the children to log into BusyThings, click on favourites and play the game called Miner birds: Christmas edition.

They will need to work out addition and subtraction number sentences. You may need to remind your child when they add they need to add both amounts together and when they take away they need to take the 2nd number away.

Please encourage your child to use counting things at home or use their fingers if they need help, as this is all good practise for Maths work and it is how we work out in the classroom too. There may be numbers up to 20 which we have not yet covered, so your child may need help with these questions only.

1 house point will be given to children who have played this game.

Wednesday 25th November - Wednesday 2nd December

This week we have learnt about life in the Victorian times.

I would like the children to log into BusyThings and create a small poster about what Victorian schools were like. They need to include pictures which they can choose from and then type sentences about Victorian schools from their learning in the week.

Children can type 1 sentence or if they find typing easy they can type a few more sentences.

Children will need help with capital letters and using the space bar. The rest of their sentences should be spelt phonetically or as they would usually write.

Children will need to type their name at the top of the poster and then save their work in their file NOT the shared Year 1 file. They can label this work as Victorian Schools.

Please continue with BusyThings games. As we are covering more in Letters and Sounds, I have added further phonemes (sounds) to increase the challenge!

I look forward to reading their posters and seeing their improvements with typing!

Wednesday 11th November - Wednesday 25th November

Time is flying by and we will soon be getting ready to film our scenes for our Christmas play!

Please, please practise rehearsing lines with your child. They need to speak clearly and show expression.

If your child has fewer lines to practise, they should be able to remember these from memory.

If your child has more lines, they do not need to remember all of them but need to know the words and become familiar with reading them.

Wednesday 4th November - Wednesday 11th November

Log in to Busy Things and click on favourites.

You will see a new game called 'Tree Keys'. It involves finding letters on a keyboard. Last week we started our ICT lessons and the children found identifying the letters really tricky. This game should help the children get better with practise. Although there is nothing to submit, I can still see which children have played which games on the favourites list, so house points will be rewarded if this game has been played by the 11th of November.

Feel free to leave me a message on BusyThings if you wish to let me know how your child gets on!
